Since May is Mental Health Month, we are taking this opportunity to speak up about the connection between addiction and mental health.

The Discovery House wants everyone to know that mental illnesses are real. We also want you to know that sometimes they lead to drug or alcohol misuse. It is important to understand early symptoms of mental illness and addiction and to know when certain behaviors are potential signs of something more.

We Bet You Didn’t Know This About Addiction and Mental Health

Something more as in drug misuse. Prescription drug misuse to be exact. Did you know that over 3.2 million people met the criteria for a prescription drug use disorder in the past year?

That’s enough people to hold hands from New York to Los Angeles. What’s more is that less than half of people receive treatment.* It’s exactly why we do what we do.

We want to help those struggling with addiction to get the treatment they need and show them how to live a fulfilling and healthy life in recovery. We believe the best way to do that is to break the stigma and share a strong message of recovery. Help is available and recovery is totally possible.

What is Prescription Drug Misuse?

We are glad you asked.

As we mentioned above, prescription drug misuse is very common. It’s when anyone uses a prescription medication that wasn’t intended for them or when someone takes their own medication in a way that was not intended by the doctor that prescribed it.

Let’s Explore The Relationship Between Addiction and Mental Health

All month long we will be sharing on our blog, About Recovery, on various topics related to addiction and mental health, particularly how they are so closely related.

We invite you to join us throughout the month of May on Twitter, Facebook, and here on our blog as we explore the relationship between mental health and addiction. Don’t forget to use hashtag #MHM2017, #RiskyBusiness in all your posts.

Remember, the best way to break the stigma is to educate as many people as possible. If you can’t take part in the conversation, you can still contribute by sharing our images and #DidYouKnow facts with your friends and family.
